a plot, sorta!

hey guys! i had an idea for a kind of community thing that might foster some interesting CR and also give non-fighter characters an opportunity to contribute to the war ICly. i've run this by the mods and got approval, so this post is to run it by everyone and gauge interest! SO: where joker came from he was a combat correspondent, which basically means he wrote articles for military newspapers and magazines about military activity in vietnam, and i was thinking about having him start up a similar thing in xistentia, like a newspaper.

under the cut is a breakdown of the stuff i've thought up, and areas which i'd love to have you guys' opinions on!

NAME: the tentative name i have right now is the dispatch, but i'm TOTALLY open to changing that if people have other suggestions!

CONTENT: it'd be sort of like a bulletin with pertinent info about the war (like a state of the game, but IC), but also some CR builders like a lonely hearts column, advertising, missed connections, and space for other players to have their characters write articles and such. the articles don't just have to be about the war, they could be about anything - maybe your character wants to write an article on the top five albums from their world that everybody should listen to, or food they had in their world that doesn't exist in xist, etc etc.

TIME FRAME: i think probably a monthly publication would make the most sense, because it's far less stressful than weekly, and it gives a longer opportunity for more things to Happen and also for people to write things they might want to add.

FORMATTING AND MECHANICS: OOCly, my suggestion for formatting would be that there'd be a post where people can volunteer stuff they want to put in. say your character writes an article - you'd then leave it as a (screened) comment on a post (for example, a post i'd set up on joker's journal), and then on a set date every month i'd make a post on the main ic comm where all the contributions were accumulated in the main body of the post.

another suggestion i have would be that the bulletin would take the form of a simple post in the comm with the basic information in the main body, and then the comments would consist of a toplevel for different categories (e.g. articles, lonely hearts, ads), and contributors would reply to those comments and post their own contributions.

the reason i have two suggestions is that the first is fairly high maintenance and requires more planning, and the second is a little looser. my issue with the second one is that, since there's less planning, there could be months where nothing at all is contributed - obviously not a problem, sometimes that happens, but it'd be kind of disappointing!

CONTRIBUTING: contributions would be on a month by month basis, so anyone can submit anything, and you wouldn't have to have your character join the staff or anything. contributing one month wouldn't lock you in to contributing every following month either, and obviously everyone would be welcome to interact with the posted articles and other content however they want when the post goes up.

at the same time, if your character wants to make this permanent, it's totally cool for this to be their job, and they'd be listed as a permanent contributor. again, that doesn't mean you'd have to have them contribute something every single month, because life gets in the way for everyone and i don't want to make this a horrible responsibility.

ICly, joker would be the editor, but that's just his job - OOCly i'm not going to be editing, cutting or changing anything about the content people put in, because i don't want to turn this into something super stressful and i don't want to put myself in a position where i'm picking at other people's writing. that's horribly demeaning, and the absolute last thing i'd want is to suck the fun out of this hobby for people.

ETCETERA: another thing which would be useful for both format suggestions would be to have a channel in the discord specifically for planning etc. obviously not everybody has discord so i'd be contactable other ways, e.g. plurk, and an ic/ooc post on joker's journal too.

QUESTIONS: if you have any questions, contributions or suggestions, PLEASE drop a comment here! also, if you have a character or characters that'd be interested, let me know here so i can see how many people would wanna try this out!

Having a set OOC post with copy/paste submission templates would be really great for this, I think. I know Mask or Menace does something similar twice a month done like this IC and OOCly like this.

Completely different setting, but still might help give you an idea of what you could do as a final product. :)

Also offering my help OOCly for organizing things if you end up needing assistance!

no problem! :)

I know that ICly my girl will probably take an interest in advertising self-defense/combat lessons for those who want to learn literally like... any method of self-defense. So you'll get at least one submission per month from her!

Ooh, this does look neat! I know Van will probably at least be advertising his willingness to do odd jobs around town - probably also his library pub, if/when he ever gets around to opening it

I'm so late at seeing this! Is this still a thing that might be in the works?? IF SO, KARA WOULD SO WANT IN ON IT. She's a journalist in her home world! She'd be ALL OVER being on the staff of this! It'd remind her of home!

(But of course, if I'm way too late for all this, then just ignore me!)
